When to Buck Tradition
So you are planning a wedding. Congrats to you and your beloved! After the champagne wears off and you lift your gaze away from your left hand for a brief moment, reality sets in and the work begins…the planning. You’ve devoured everything on The Knot. You’ve scoured Pinterest and created boards galore. You’ve flipped through Martha Steward Weddings. And, you’ve endlessly polled your friends and family. In essence, you have taken a head-first dive into the world of butter cream frosting, tulle and Chantilly lace, and dreamy honeymoon locations trying to answer the elusive question: How do I make this wedding absolutely P-E-R-F-E-C-T?
But…when you came up for air, you may have asked yourself: Do I really have to follow all of these traditions to have a P-E-R-F-E-C-T wedding? The short answer is NO.
Embrace Your Vision
Typical wedding traditions might not fit your vision of perfect. And that is OK. Embrace that you are a unique individual and make your wedding fit your personality and style. You are not a white-dress-kind-of-gal? It is 2015, afterall…we give you permission to wear whatever shade makes you feel amazing and beautiful. A big, formal Saturday night church wedding doesn’t fit anyone’s schedule or budget, but an intimate Sunday afternoon garden wedding feels more comfortable? Go ahead and book it. Traditional vanilla wedding cake just doesn’t do it for you, but you’ve been having fork-fights over chocolate molten lava cake your whole life? By all means….find a way to celebrate ooey-gooey-chocolate-y warm cake!
Break the Rules
At my own wedding I bucked tradition. I didn’t throw a bouquet. I danced a mother-daughter-brother dance instead of the traditional father-daughter dance. My son walked me down the aisle to “God Bless the Broken Road” and not “Here Comes The Bride.” Sometimes traditions don’t work out for everyone and that’s OK. It’s an opportunity to do some fun, unexpected and memorable. I personally think that Martha Stewart has too much control over weddings. It’s time to take the power back and do what you want! ;)
